VoIP Platform Optimisation Through Media Bypass and Offloading

During my work at TECHNEWS365 IT INSTITUTE, I led a research and development project to improve the efficiency of a VoIP platform that was consuming significant server resources. The existing system processed voice media through a central server throughout each call, increasing CPU, memory and bandwidth usage. I investigated the problem and redesigned the media-handling arrangement so that eligible voice traffic could bypass the central server while call signalling remained under its control. According to the employer's confirmation, the resulting architecture reduced overall CPU, RAM and bandwidth utilisation by approximately 50%.

The challenge

The existing VoIP platform was consuming considerable server resources because all voice media passed through the central call-processing server throughout each call.

Even after a connection was established, the server continued receiving and forwarding RTP packets. This placed additional demands on CPU processing, memory and network bandwidth.

The challenge was to reduce this unnecessary workload without disrupting call signalling or affecting the reliability of voice communication. I needed to investigate whether the media-handling architecture could be improved while retaining the existing platform's call-control functions.

The solution

I led the research and development work to investigate the platform's resource consumption and identify opportunities for improvement.

After examining how voice traffic travelled through the system, I redesigned the media-handling arrangement using media bypass, also known as media offloading or media-off.

The revised architecture allowed eligible RTP streams to avoid unnecessary processing through the central server, while SIP signalling remained under the platform's control.

I worked through the technical investigation, architectural changes, testing and implementation of the revised arrangement.

The objective was to improve the efficiency of the existing infrastructure rather than introduce an entirely new VoIP platform. The approach allowed the system to make better use of its available resources while maintaining its call-control functions.

The outcome

The optimised architecture reduced unnecessary media processing and improved the efficiency of the central VoIP platform.

According to the signed confirmation issued by TECHNEWS365 IT INSTITUTE, the project achieved an approximately 50% reduction in overall CPU, RAM and bandwidth utilisation.

This improvement helped the platform use its existing infrastructure more efficiently and reduced the resources required for centralised voice-media handling.

The project demonstrated how changes to media routing could improve telecommunications infrastructure without requiring a complete replacement of the existing system.

The reported performance figures are historical results confirmed by the employer. Original monitoring logs and individual baseline measurements are not available for independent reproduction.
